How to Use This Glossary

Labels are helpful shortcuts, but they do not guarantee content or tone. Always check summaries, age ratings, and content warnings. If a term is used inconsistently across communities, we note that in the definition.

Core Genre Labels

  • Yuri: The standard umbrella term for stories centered on relationships between women. Ranges from subtle romance to explicit adult works.
  • GL (Girls' Love): Industry label used by publishers in Japan, Korea, and English-speaking markets. Interchangeable with yuri.
  • Shoujo-ai: A term used in early 2000s Western fandom to mean softer, non-explicit romance. Not used by Japanese publishers. Usage has declined.
  • Josei: Manga targeting adult women. Yuri can appear within josei, but josei is an audience label, not a genre.
  • Shoujo: Manga targeting teen girls. Many classic yuri works originated in shoujo magazines, but not all shoujo contains yuri.
  • Seinen: Manga targeting adult men. Yuri also appears in seinen publications, often with different themes or pacing.
  • Doujinshi: Self-published or fan-made works. Many yuri creators release doujinshi alongside their published works.

Historical and Regional Terms

  • Class S (esu): Early 20th-century Japanese literary genre depicting intense emotional bonds between schoolgirls. Pioneered by Yoshiya Nobuko in the 1910s and 1920s. A precursor to modern yuri.
  • Yuri Hime: A dedicated yuri manga magazine launched by Ichijinsha in 2003. Helped establish yuri as a distinct commercial category in Japan.
  • Baihe: Chinese term for yuri/GL. Literally "lily," the same meaning as yuri in Japanese.
  • Bian: Chinese slang term for lesbian, sometimes used in GL contexts.
  • Baekap: Korean term for yuri/GL content.

Relationship and Character Terms

  • Friends to lovers: A relationship that evolves from established friendship.
  • Rivals to lovers: Characters who start in conflict and grow closer.
  • Senpai / Kouhai: Upperclassman and underclassman dynamic, common in school settings.
  • Age gap: A relationship with a noticeable age difference. Often paired with workplace or mentor themes.
  • Childhood friends: Characters who grew up together and develop romance later.
  • Mentor / protege: A dynamic built around guidance, growth, and trust.

Formats and Publishing Terms

  • One-shot: A single, self-contained chapter.
  • Anthology: Multiple short stories by different creators in one volume.
  • Serialization: A story released in chapters over time in a magazine or web platform.
  • Tankobon: A collected volume compiling serialized chapters.
  • Webtoon: Vertical scroll format designed for mobile reading. Popular in Korean GL.
  • Imprint: A publisher label focused on a specific style or audience.

  • Slow burn: Romance that develops gradually across many chapters.
  • Wholesome: Soft, comforting tone with minimal drama.
